Canvas Preparation: Having been a framer for years I was using and old guillotine chopper to cut the stretchers and a Cassese underpinner(1985) to nail everything together. I have since built a new studio and space is now at a premium and the old tools have been replaced. I now use a Makita miter saw and different pneumatic nail guns to join the stretchers. These tools take up allot less space and can be stored in a cabinet out of sight. The canvas is then is stapled onto the bars using 5/16 inch staples and a pair of canvas pliers. The last step of the preparation is two or three coats of gesso and sanding if needed. Then the fun begins and we start throwing paint.
